![]() And the climactic battle lacks tension and suspense because, apart from Harley, none of the movie’s hero characters are very well developed, therefore it’s difficult to invest in them and care about their welfare when they’re fighting the bad guys. There are a few fun action sequences scattered across Birds of Prey’s 109 minute runtime, all of which feature magnificently colourful cinematography, and Harley’s fight choreography is well done whenever she’s in the thick of the action – her brawling with a baseball bat after inadvertently inhaling cocaine is particularly fun to watch – but those aforementioned random digressions also disrupt the flow of some of the action and the momentum of certain fight scenes is adversely impacted as a result. Consequently, the narrative doesn’t unfold very smoothly and feels jarringly disjointed as a whole. Its story and structure are incredibly messy due to the fact that there are a number of flashbacks and digressions randomly inserted into the narrative, which sometimes stop the story dead in its tracks at pivotal moments and are occasionally so long that the flow of the scene into which they’re inserted is completely disrupted by the time the focus returns to the point in the story at which the deviation began. Unfortunately, however, there’s not a whole lot else I can compliment about Birds of Prey. I genuinely don’t have a bad word to say about her work here and I look forward to seeing her playing the part for a third time in The Suicide Squad next year. Once again delivering a captivatingly quirky and charismatic performance, and succeeding in making Quinn seem simultaneously suitably zany and manic, fantastically formidable and, above all else, extremely likable, Robbie is the definite highlight of this film too. Margot Robbie’s stellar performance as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad was by far the best thing about that film and the exceedingly talented Australian actress is absolutely excellent as the character again here. Overall I recommend this movie to anybody who wants a fun and funny action flick to end there night.Directed by Cathy Yan, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), the eighth entry in DC’s cinematic universe (which, I guess, given the events of the recently-aired “Crisis on Infinite Earths” Arrowverse crossover episodes, is actually a part of a fictional multiverse that connects all of DC’s live action projects, past and present), follows infamous Batman villain Harley Quinn as she comes into conflict with fellow Dark Knight adversary Roman Sionis/Black Mask and, while feuding with the nefarious crime lord, crosses paths with several other individuals who have beef with him for various reasons. Harley also drinks to excess in some scenes. (SPOILER) the villain is blown in half brutally. The results of a bloody shooting of a family are briefly shown. Characters are hit with bats, blunt objects, etc. Harley has a sort of glitter gun she shoots people with bloodlessly but she strangely still racks up a high body count with it. One character uses a crossbow to kill villains, shooting them in the chest, neck, and face. In terms of violence the violence in this movie wasn’t as bad as people are saying here. ![]() Along with the great villain, Black Mask played by Ewan McGregor. ![]() She would be a great Harley Quinn for future movies. ![]() She brought so much comedy and personality to Harley and it ended up matching well.
